Abstract

PURPOSE: To form the stable weld zone free from burn-through by inserting the specific small metal piece in the arbitrary position in the root of the groove of butted stationary pipes, melting the same and applying arc welding with the molten pool thus formed as a start point. CONSTITUTION: In automatic TIG welding of the butt portions of stationary pipes 2a, 2b, a small metal piece 1 of a prismoid shape composed of the material equivalent to that of the stationary pipes is inserted in the arbitrary position in the root of the groove and an arc is generated from an electrode 5 while shielding gas is being spouted from a welding nozzle 3, whereby the small piece 1 is melted. A filler wire 4 is continuously fed onto the molten pool thus formed and the arc welding is subsequently applied while the nozzle 3 is being moved along the circumference of the groove. With this method, the initial penetration beads are formed with less incident heat while the specified gap of the groove is being maintained by the small piece 1 and the turbulence of the shielding gas is prevented, and therefore the stable welding may be accomplished.
